Zynk vs PairDrop

PairDrop is free and open-source for quick same-network browser handoffs. But WebRTC only encrypts in transit, its FAQ admits you still have to trust the server, and closing the tab ends every pairing. Zynk is end-to-end encrypted, and your devices stay paired after you close it.

A native app that remembers your devices

  • You want a menu-bar tray that's always there, not a browser tab that closes and ends every pairing.
  • You want end-to-end encryption, not WebRTC transit encryption that still requires trusting the server.
  • You want a conversation, voice notes, in-app preview, and PDF signing inside a native app.
  • You want to right-click "Send with Zynk" in Finder or Explorer instead of dragging files into a browser tab.
  • You want managed share and drop links and a CLI for scripts and servers.

What we noted

  • PairDrop is free, libre, and private for same-network use. No signup, no setup, Docker self-hosting, QR codes, and it works in any browser tab. For a quick one-off handoff on the same Wi-Fi, it's hard to beat.
  • For a quick handoff on the same network with nothing installed and nothing remembered, PairDrop is hard to beat, and self-hosting is a real plus if you want to run your own. Zynk fits better when transfers recur or have to leave the network.
